Reiki is a noun

One of the biggest myths in modern day spiritual teaching is that we are separate from the energy we channel. This is accompanied by the words “send”, “distance”, “protection” and “switching Reiki on”.

To believe this is to be completely missing the point of what spiritual learning is all about – which is to discover spirituality is in us.

In modern teaching the word Reiki is often used as a verb – as in to do Reiki. Reiki was meant as a noun, a word to describe core energy (Rei – spiritual Ki – energy).

In Usui’s time to do Reiki healing was called Usui Reiki Ryoho, which translates to Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Method. This is much more than just the “hands on healing” the modern use of the word Reiki is most frequently associated with, as it includes the meditations, mantras, attunements (Reiju) and precepts that form a suggested roadmap to “Reiki”.

This simple discernment is huge when it comes to our personal practice. It means we do not have to acquire special powers to heal ourselves and eliminates the question of whether anyone can “do” Reiki.

Discovering true self

The greatest healers are those that are invested in discovering their true selves. These may not be the healthiest or most “successful” people by modern day standards, but those most willing to let go of their mind-made ideas of who they are and discover what source energy is. It means they will come in all shapes and sizes and all walks of life, and cannot be judged by external criteria.

Such people illuminate to us what we too are capable of being, should we let go of the reasons and beliefs that stop us from knowing who we are. They remind us, we do not “do” Reiki, we are Reiki energy already. There is nothing to do, except to come home to our true selves, and be rejuvenated.
